Our Gang's Kingdom The Movie Monopoly The roverpak called Our Gang controls the Metropole Theater because entertainment is infrastructure. They cannot forage, so they provide films in exchange for tribute, and everyone needs what they sell. It is a business model built on the ruins of the entertainment industry. The Only Neutral Ground The meat of the deal is sanctuary: no one attacks the movies. The arrangement arose after a brutal battle at the old Loew's Granada in which films were lost in a fire. Now guns are checked, prices paid in cans, and the dark becomes a fragile peace.

The Barter of Canned Goods The New Currency Admission to the Metropole costs a can of Oscar Mayer Philadelphia Scrapple for Vic and a tin of sardines for Blood. Money is memory; food is money. The checking of weapons in the alcove beside the ticket booth turns the theater into a demilitarized zone. The Little Tyranny of Checked Guns Vic's furious negotiation to keep his weapons dry reveals the daily texture of this economy, small indignities, threats of broken bones, a warty checker who answers to the guards' bren guns. The system works because everyone is armed and nobody wants to test it.

The Division of Labor Each Pack a Function The Dragons run a power plant for tribute; Ted's Bunch minds the reservoir; the Bastinados farm marijuana; the Barbados Blacks pay a dozen members a year to clean radiation pits. Civilization on the surface is a patchwork of armed labor unions. The Contract With Death Vic's envy of Our Gang's easy niche sharpens the portrait: every advantage is bought with somebody's blood. The ecology of packs is the book's offhand sociology lesson, a dark parody of specialization.

Films as Sanctuary The Dead Stars' Comfort Raw Deal, a propaganda film, and a beaver loop are the cultural treasures of the wasteland. Sprocket-slipped and water-stained, they still bind the audience's attention; even Blood postures about his on-screen ancestors. The movies are the last shared dream of a shattered people. The Rite of the Dark The solo men in the theater masturbate in unison, absorbed and harmless. For a few hours the violence is suspended. The clue to the entire story sits in this contradiction: the same culture that nurtures a rapist also craves escape into flickering images.

The Risk of the Streets The Empty Craters The streets after dark are weed-grown killing fields; Vic's caution as he trails the mystery solo is the conditioned reflex of the surface. Every shadow might hold a burnpit-screamer, every crater a rover. The Strong Arm of Order Yet order still exists in small forms, the packs' territories, the theater truce, the unspoken no-go zones around dropshafts. The wasteland is not chaos; it is a poor and violent market of mutual needs.
